Throw back Thursday..... Thursday in the Square, Buffalo NY, Aug. 7, 2008

what a fabulous day it was, when we arrived at Layfeyette Square in Buffalo Dweezil and Thomas we’re setting things up. For the next 2 hours Dweezil played, the smell of chicken wings in the air, the sun was shining, what could go wrong. The band came out for sound check, everything was working fine. It was going to be a great night! The opening band came out for their set and the skies darkened. By the time the openers finished it was pitch black and a light rain was falling. Dweezil (and Zappa plays Zappa) hit the stage the crowd moved forward towards the stage, everyone was getting into the sweet sounds coming from The talented ensemble .... and the sky lit up with lightning and the skies opened up. Pouring rain, huge lightning bolts, the roof on the stage started to leak and Aaron put a towel over his head. The most popular person in the Square was selling plastic ponchos for a dollar ... and the band kept playing ....

soon the police arrived with some local officials and shut down the show but what a night! I’d do it all again TOMORROW.... miss DZ and the band, miss shows, miss the NORMAL. Have a great Thursday

Dear Dweezil Zappa,

I hope you and your family are doing well given the global circumstances.

I am writing to thank you for the years of happiness and music you have provided myself and my family over the years.

My father grew up as a big Zappa fan since his purchase of Freak Out! and Absolutely Free when he was a kid. He has since brainwashed me into a fan during my younger years and completed the conversion at the Zappa Plays Zappa show at Hamer Hall, November 30th 2007 (Melbourne, Australia). I was a young 13-year-old boy starstruck in the front row. The highlights of the night included being selected to provide words for the improvisational portion of the program “Dupree’s Paradise”. I will never forget how you and your team managed to fit in so elegantly my word, “Wizzle Wozzle”, alongside others, into such phrases like “Insemination! Little boy in his room, wonder what his Wizzle Wozzle does”. My uncle was at the show the night before and was fortunate enough to also suggest the word “Gruntled” while you were trying to figure out what the f@%k “Eaf” means! Between the audience participation, shaking your hand, being handed a guitar pick and a shattered drum stick, I will always remember that night as a brilliant sonic performance and a special evening between Father and Son.

Since then, we have done our best to trek to all your Zappa Plays Zappa shows in Melbourne and across Australia, including having tickets to your planned show earlier this year. The last time we met was in 2018 at the Forum for the 50 Years of Frank: Dweezil Zappa Plays Whatever the F@%k He Wants tour. I remember your stirring performance of Watermelon in Easter Hay, and as a big Joe’s Garage fan, I was floored that I was able to experience it live.

For that performance, all shows past and to come, I say thank you. I look forward to following in my fathers footsteps and brainwashing my kids with Zappa.

I was wondering if by any chance there is some form of archived recording of the Hamer Hall Concert from November 30th, 2007? I wish I could experience that improvisational masterpiece again and recall the experience with my old man.

Regardless,

I wish you and your family good health and wellbeing, and for the future to be filled with many more opportunities to celebrate brilliant music.

Warm regards and thanks,

Nicholas. N (26)

Nicholas,

Thanks for the kind words! I'm glad you've been enjoying the music and I appreciate your support here on my site.

I will see if I can locate the hard drive from that tour. I'll keep you posted if I have any luck!

Be well, DZ

Another weekend .... still locked down still no shows ... so what’s Dweezil working on? Something to amaze us?

Dweezil

Precisely Phil. I'm in the amazement aisle deep down in the sequin mines collecting the necessary accouterments for the weekend.

Phil

Looks like you made it out unscathed from your visit to the mines and DZ you sure found some tasty morsels down there .... what PPE is required in the mines?
